About Trees & Trails
Trees and Trails are approximately 5 miles of wandering paths through the woodlands of Burden Center located at Essen Lane at I-10 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Open to the public, 8:30am-5:00pm, the trails offer educational opportunities as well as a serene way to explore nature and enjoy the outdoors. School classes, hikers, bird watchers, scout troops are all welcome, as well as individuals and families.
The Trees & Trails project is in keeping with The Burden Foundation’s understanding of the importance of good stewardship of nature and her natural resources. The Burden Horticulture Society, Baton Rouge Green, the Junior League and FORUM 35 joined hands and brazened machetes to blaze nature trails through the woods at Burden Center. The LSU Ag Center supports this project by maintaining the trails and reforestation of the woodlands.
For Schools and Teachers:
This interactive website will support the educational aspects of the
Trees & Trails project using many useful teacher tools, including
downloadable pre-tests and post-tests. Teachers in the East Baton Rouge
Parish School District participating in a Trees and Trails field trip
will receive six contact hours to apply towards their staff development
requirements in the public school system.
The Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry has been working closely with many project partners to develop learning opportunities along the trails that use award-winning Project Learning Tree activities (correlated to state benchmarks and GLE’s). The trail system was envisioned by legendary tree advocate, Steele Burden, decades ago prior to the donation of his family’s property to LSU (1966-1994).
